RE: How to stop MS Office from opening my files?

You might try this. No guarantees. I run XP Pro and Microsoft Office. Your computer is different.
Go to your Docs folder and right-click on one of the word processing docs in there. (Nothing in there? Make a dummy doc.)
Right-click should bring up a bunch of options, one of which is "open with". Highlight Open With and you will see a list of programs and the option to "choose program". Do the latter. It should bring up a longer list of programs. Choose the program you want as word processor (Works, in your case) and then check the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file."
I hope this works for you. If it does, and for sure the documents open, then maybe go ahead and uninstall the unwanted program.

RE: Where to camp in Bishop Ca>

There are 4 great BLM campgrounds. No hookups, not even available water. Their beautiful scenery and price of $5 per night might make it worth your while to hunt for a place to fill up your water and to dump once in a while.
There is a dump station in Bishop: "Large Shell truck/auto station at south end of town on US 395, double dump in back lot, $12 fee." RV Dumps website

RE: chili7 about your knee surgeries

Same for me: poor sleeping, very curtailed lifestyle. I showed my doctor my calendar for the month before, all the stuff I had planned, and all the X's thru items cancelled due to pain. He sent me to orthopedics. They explained it all, showed me my X-rays (almost no cartilage), made a recommendation of surgery, and said that the decision was totally mine.
I went away for a couple of months and tried a bunch of other stuff (yoga, physical therapy, losing weight, different meds) without improvement. Talked to many folks who had had total knee replacement and ALL of them said that their only regret was that they had waited so long to do it. I made my decision to go for it, spent several months on the surgery waiting list.
My surgery was on July 11. Now, less than 6 weeks later, I already have less pain and more mobility than before. I'm not yet back to hiking, but soon!

RE: Big Bear Yellow Post 33 7/18-7/20

Info from San Bernardino NF website just now, with no mention of the gate key noted in FishPoet's post. I'd say call the NF to check; no sense getting near but not to the YP site.
Yellow Post Sites
Yellow Post Sites are campsites located off main travel routes. Though many Yellow Post Sites are located within highly used recreation areas, they still offer a sense of peace and solitude. Yellow Post Sites were specifically created to provide a place where human impacts could be properly managed, thereby reducing those impacts in the surrounding areas.
No wood or charcoal fires permitted, due to high fire danger.
Gas / Propane camp stoves and lanterns are permitted.
Picnic tables may be at some locations.
Pack it in, pack it out. trash disposal is not available, take everything you brought with you when you leave.
A visitor permit is not required.
Sites are available on a first-come first-served basis. It is not possible to make reservations.
An Adventure Pass or America the Beautiful Interagency Pass is required for most sites.
Check with the local Ranger Station for Yellow Post Site locations, Adventure Pass requirements, and current fire use restrictions.

Dometic has changed its latches over the years. My old one had a latch that held it cracked open. New one doesn't. What a pain!

You might need an RV-type site for this. Many state and forest service campgrounds have tent pads which are quite a way from the parking spot. I don't know about private campgrounds.

RE: 13mpg on a 20ft Chevy 350 Class C. Is it normal?

9200# 19' Class C on a SRW 4x4 Silverado chassis, 8.1 & 6-spd Allison. On ~level terrain, 12.5 @ 65-70, 13.8 @ 55-60. But those numbers are from the dash computer, which has been slightly optimistic when checked against fill-ups. Partly due to the Onan's gas not being measured, I'm sure. "
Jim & I have nearly identical Tigers, except mine weighs less (no generator, no roof A/C) and mine has less wind resistance (no roof A/C, no roof railing). I've used the dash computer mpg reading, the dash computer gallons used/miles driven readings, and my written log book. All come out pretty close to the same.
It's also worth noting that our Tigers are 4WD, which usually get worse mileage than 2WD.
13.8 sounds good. Maybe I should try driving 55-60. Or not. Might get run over at that speed on CA freeways.

My 2006 19.5 foot Chevy C with a monster 8.1 L engine gets 12.5 MPG at 70 MPH on the highway. A smaller engine could easily get 13 MPG or more.

RE: Camping question

You really won't need any more stuff for 8 weeks than for 1 week. Don't forget to build in some laundromat time. I find that my only limitation is how much alone time I can handle. One solution is to break up a long trip with some brief visits to family or friends along the way. My personal record for a solo trip is 32 days, at the end of which I did not want to stop but work was calling. Sigh. Some day....

I'm a San Diegan. "Buried in snow" doesn't happen. How about these two shots? Note the dates, not really truly winter.

RE: Frig fall out

I use small plastic baskets. In my fridge, that is two baskets per shelf. It seems like stuff cannot get a running start at the door to whack it open when in the baskets. On the rare occasions when rough roads make the door open anyway, the whole basket plops out onto the floor instead of a bunch of separate items. I don't know if the baskets restrict the flow of cold air around inside the fridge.

RE: ice cream ball recipe booklet

Manufacturer's site has many recipes.
Here is their recipe for Basic Vanilla Ice Cream
1 pint of Half & Half*
1 ½ teaspoons vanilla
1/3 cup + 2 tablespoons sugar
*Using whole cream makes a richer creamier ice cream. Using part milk and half and half makes a lighter ice cream, but takes longer to freeze.
Yield: about a pint of smooth and creamy ice cream.

RE: Is there a service like this? (ship RV across country)

Here's another thought: Get a second truck & TC. Store it in the area you want to explore. Take multiple trips to that area. Then move it to another area. Total cost might not be much more than moving your primary unit all around the country, plus you'd have the primary unit at home down here in the corner all the time for two-day weekend trips.

RE: Is there a service like this? (ship RV across country)

One solution to living down here in the "corner" is a fly-drive trip. Mine are usually 10 days, sometimes tent camping (gasp) or motel/B&B. You'd be surprised at what dirt roads those rental cars can travel. It's not home-sweet-4x4RV, but it's not all bad.

RE: Lonely and down

I've been alone for many years, increasingly disabled with knee problems lately, and just had a total knee replacement 16 days ago. My motivation for physical therapy is to get better fast to get out there camping again.
Your DW probably misses your trips as much as you do. Perhaps you could do those brief solo trips to scout out great places to take her after surgery, and bring stories and photos back to her? A great place could even be sitting in the comfy RV at some scenic spot in your own town.
You said "...she wants me to take one of our two small Shih Tzu dogs and go some place, and have some fun, but I cant imagine going any place alone." This may mean that she feels responsible for your happiness or lack thereof, and that's a big burden to put on her.
Your profile says you live in Mendocino, which is practically like living in heaven. Plan a two-hour trip alone and go back to her filled with a sense of accomplishment about that, and she will probably be happier because you are happier.
Best wishes to both of you!
